Celebrating inspiring and innovative women that have influenced our past, present and future, Cultural Exchange Event supported by SHMASHIR and hosted by Soroptimist International Torrens celebrated 125th Anniversary of Suffrage and Women achieving the right to stand for Parliament.
The event focused on providing citizenship rights information to migrant women, asylum seekers and refugees who have recently settled in SA. The all-day activities were based around sampling authentic middle eastern foods. Women from a range of cultural backgrounds attended and participated in sharing their culture with other groups. Activities included African dancing, multicultural choir, art and craft demonstrations, storytelling and henna painting.
The event included many female politicians, who talked with the guests about accessing their rights, lobbying and advocacy and how Politicians can assist these migrants and refugees to access support. We also showcased some of our history in South Australia, with the Muriel Matters Society represented and a historian relating the story of Mary Lee, passing on some of our own cultural beginnings as women in this South Australia.
